Incorporating The 8 Ways into an RE unit

On my previous placement, I taught an RE lesson relating to the Good Samaritan. The focus of the lesson was the importance of ensuring that we look after one another and keep each other safe, as well as the importance of saying ‘sorry’. As a whole class dicsussion, we discussed the feelings, emotions and experience of the students when they have felt lonely or sad. We spoke about why they felt like that and what they would do if someone was feeling isolated.

As a class activity i got the students to role-play scenarios that depicted someone feeling sad and lonely and then were required to come up with a solution to how they would respond to the situation. What would they do make that person feel better?

 Incorporating the 8 Ways the lesson could contain:

Story sharing- get students to discuss with a partner, a time in their lives that they had felt isolated and lonely and why they had felt like that?

Community link- discuss with the students why it is important for everyone in the community to feel accepted? How can we make people feel welcomed and supported?

Non-verbal- discuss how our actions without words can communicate messages to other people. What emotions and feelings can be communicated through body language rather than through oral language?

Connecting The 8 Ways with Kakadu National Park

Kakadu National Park reflects the 8 Ways Framework through the close “frontier community’ of the rangers, Aboriginal citizens and tourists. The National Park can be considered as a learning environment due to the evidence of the natural vegetation showing past occupations being present, through rock paintings and stone tools at hand. A lot of work and effort goes into conserving the natural state of the land as well as to keeping it safe for all its vistors and Aboriginal citzens who live on the land. In doing so, knowledge from the past is used to preserve the future. For example, in Aboriginal processes, they burn the surrounding spear grass to avoid future grass fires. Therefore, the park rangers do the same to try and preserve the land.

Another example of how the park rangers respect the Aboriginal processes is maintenatce of wildlife in the park. To ensure that the land is safe from Water Crocodile’s, instead of killing the Crocodile, they send them off to Crocodile farms where they can be looked after. This is to respect the Aboriginal culture ¬†wherethey believe that the animals have a right to live.

Rangers meet with the local Aboriginal community and researchers to bring all the knowledge together to see what they can do, to make Kakadu the best that it can be.

8 Ways was developed to allow teachers to integrate western teaching with Aboriginal style teaching. It allows teachers to be exposed to a different perspective of teaching, which they can embedd into their own teaching. It is also a great style of learning for students to embrace, allowing them to experince learning through a different window.

The 8 Ways allows educators to teach the curriculum and at the same time embedd an Aboriginal perspective to the lessons. This also permits teachers to be creative in teaching students new knowledge. Rather than students learning through traditional textbooks and websites, students can learn from stories being shared, culture, language, land and spirit. It allows for a new diemension of learning to take place.

Educators taking on board this innovative style of teaching also cater for numerous learning abilities such as visual and aesthetic learners.
